Earlier this year my husband and I were able to take a “staycation” in Alys Beach FL. It felt as if we were somewhere else and not just 15 minutes from home.

The Alys Beach aesthetic represents a marriage of tradition and romance. It’s the union of English and Spanish architecture with the soul of a European resort. It is a new vision of Florida architecture, inspired by Bermuda and Antigua Guatemala. Beautiful, white stucco walls and white-ridged roofs are like the whitecaps on an azure ocean. The style is simple and timeless.

The town’s master plan was designed by, the internationally acclaimed town planners, Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company. Duany also designed Seaside, which is where the movie The Truman Show was filmed, starring Jim Carey.

As a Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND), in which homes are placed closely together and within walking distance of centralized amenities, Alys Beach is a walkable community with spacious central courtyards and community spaces. Each home includes a small courtyard (some with pools) which provides lots of privacy. Many homes also feature rooftop terraces for additional outdoor space and gorgeous gulf views. Here are some pictures of the home we stayed in:

My husband, Michael, being the incredible Architectural Photographer he is, and who keeps some crazy hours (going to sleep when I wake up!) took these amazing Alys Beach night shots from the bridge towards the back of the community:
